MISSION COMMISSION

March Communion Offering

We have designated the UMCOR processing/warehousing facility known as the Sager Brown Center in Louisiana to be the recipient of the March communion offering. This is a busy, busy place. Volunteers from around the world come here to help with the processing of relief supplies. They receive, verify, package, store and ship relief supplies throughout the world. Supplies include health kits, flood buckets, sewing kits, school bags, layette kits and more. This year UMCOR Sager Brown celebrates the 140th anniversary of their wide-ranging ministry. This year we will support them with our communion offering. Perhaps another year we could actually be among the 2700 volunteers who help the Sager Brown Center accomplish its mission as a world wide disaster relief center.

Dr. and Mrs. Luhahi have served as university professors at Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) in Meru Kenya since 1999. By giving their services as missionaries and not drawing salaries from KEMU, the Luhahi’s help keep the cost of tuition down making a college education more attainable in an already financially-challenged country. Dr. Luhahi, who heads the math department, firmly believes that education will help Kenyans rise out of poverty. Mrs. Luhahi educates future nurses in a country that desperately needs them. Kenya has about 15 doctors and 23 nurses for every 100,000 people. The average life expectancy hovers around 50 and AIDS has left more than 1 million orphaned children relying on an ill-equipped government to care for them. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Luhahi provides AIDS prevention education and an AIDS support group to the community
