Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted.
Reflection from John Doe:
I think a lot of the time, we choose not to give thanks for the small things. Jesus had five loaves of bread, and two fish. He looked at the crowd and saw 5000 people. Most of us would have been discouraged at that time. I know that personally, I would have thought that God choose not to help me in that situation. I would have mumbled at the food and rolled my eyes as I begrudgingly told the surrounding crowd that we didn’t have enough food to feed them, and that they had to fend for themselves. What’s so profound about Jesus however, is that his faith never wavered for a second. He knew that God is all-powerful and He believed in miracles. Even though the situation seemed bleak and impossible, he gave thanks for the little that God had given him. His faithfulness was acknowledged in God’s eyes, and God gave him the desires of his heart.
On my thirteenth birthday, I was sitting in my godmother's house, waiting to go about my
birthday activities. One of her friends walked through the door, and I excitedly told her that it was my birthday. She smiled at me, and dug into her pocket to find two dimes and plopped them into my hands. I beamed at her and thanked her. She then looked at me again, opened up her wallet and handed me a five-dollar bill. I was so surprised, I ran to show my mother. I didn’t know it then, but she was testing me to see if I would be grateful for the small. When she saw that I was genuinely thankful, she knew she could trust me with more, and give me a larger sum of money. When God saw that Jesus was thankful for the little he had, he trusted him with the bigger things. Be faithful and thankful with the little you’re given, and God will trust you with the bigger things and give you blessings you never imagined.
Lord, help us to be grateful for all the gifts that you have given us, no matter how small they have been.We know that you are an all-powerful God, and we trust your plan and your promise. Help our faith to increase in you, and let us be more willing to step out in your name. AMEN
