Waiting is hard.

Whether one is waiting in anticipation of celebration or waiting for news of a diagnosis, uncertainty and delayed gratification can be unbearable. Waiting requires a different sort of posture - one of anxious anticipation and restless unease. Waiting rooms are filled with hard plastic chairs, droning tv, and outdated magazines. We sit and try to distract ourselves as we wait for time to pass.

The Christian year begins before Christmas with a season of waiting. Four weeks of anticipation and preparation. Our culture fills this time with shopping and decorating and parties. We put up lights and trees and find excuses to spend money and gather with friends and family. And still, more often than not, we are left unsatisfied and restless. 

​

Every year at First Church we turn to our Christian tradition during times of uncertainty and waiting.  We hear ancient texts of prophecy, remembering God’s preparations for His people in generations past. Our congregation gathers, quieting their hearts as they sing and pray. We wait together for the coming of Christ. 

​

All of us need a sanctuary in times of waiting. You are invited to join us at First Church Sundays at 10 am.  Our worship is a place of welcome and inclusion where diverse people gather as followers of Jesus.
