Will you join us in a celebration of peace?
Families from the Des Plaines area will come together on the weekend of September 15 & 16, 2018 to make a statement for peace, the way Jesus would want all of us to lead our lives.
Everyone will create pinwheels of all shapes and sizes. Write your thoughts about "war and peace / tolerance/ living in harmony with others" on one side. It can be poetry, prose – whatever writing form is you'd like to express yourself.
Decorate the other side to visually express your feelings. Assemble these pinwheels, and on Sept. 16, "plant" your pinwheels outside on our beautiful lawn as a public statement and art exhibit/installation.
The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the coming week.
'Flood the nations with grace and mercy,
Send forth your word,
Lord, and let there be light.'
HERE'S HOW YOUR FAMILY CAN PARTICIPATE:
Join us on Saturday, September 15, 2018 to create pinwheels. It's easy and it's fun. This is a project for everyone; toddlers to grandparents! We'll show you how to get started, and there will be materials available (for free!).
You can get an early start by making pinwheels at home, if you would like.
This link will download an easy, fun-to-make, do-it-yourself pinwheel template.
When your pinwheels are ready, we'll plant them on our beautiful front lawn. Hundreds of cars going by on the busy streets will see our work!
Spread the message of peace!
THE HISTORY OF 'PINWHEELS OF PEACE'
Pinwheels for Peace, the movement, was started as an art installation project September 21, 2005 by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, art teachers at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what is going on in the world and in their lives. The project was quickly embraced by the students and the entire school community and by millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in our world. Since then, it has grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to four million pinwheels in 2014 and it continues to grow.
Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.
