“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one,Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one-- I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Reflection from Carmanie Bhatti:
During his earthly ministry, Jesus was on a mission to connecting with underprivileged and helping them get accepted by the privileged. The scripture tells us, he hung out with prostitutes, tax collectors, outcast and the poor. Being from a Jewish background, which was considerably a high class, Jesus neither looked down on non-Jews and marginalized or called upon them any judgement. He preached about embracing the outcast because they were like any other human beings. The secret to his successful mission was obedience to God and listening to God and making God’s will be done on earth. When we go through the scriptures, Jesus is seen spending a significant amount of time praying to God and asking God’s will and desire.
Sometimes we see that when we spend a certain amount of time with one being, we tend to develop a mindset and behavior as the other and consider a bond between that other and ourselves. Maybe it’s because we intend to associate with the values of that person and together shape that company as “us.”
When I think of my closeness with my father who is not physically with me in the U.S. and is living in Pakistan, I still feel connected to him. I feel that it is because my father has been a friend, mentor and a guide to me. Our bonding, despite our commonalities and differences, make us spiritually so connected that are live in each other. We spent time listening to each other’s narrations with a good ear. In a similar manner, we who are the members of the Body of Christ, are called to be in direct communication with the triune God and the Body of Christ. Though We, have weaknesses and strengths and, we share common and different traits than God, we still are one in God if we live recognize that God’s love already abides in us and is manifest through us.
God, help us listen to one another so that we learn how to develop relationships with you, the Christ who in disguise lives in us. Help us embody you and your love. Manifest in us and through us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
