At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Reflection from Larry Maloney :
Even after performing miracles and spreading the good news throughout Galilee, the townspeople still did not comprehend what was happening. Disillusioned, Jesus thanks the Father for revealing his mission to the ‘least of these,’ the children. How typical of God to work through the powerless, the meek, the humble, and how typical of the powerful to scoff at Him and reject Him.
Our knowledge of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit will always be limited. Jesus says we can’t know the Father except through the Son and vice versa. But we shouldn’t despair. All we need to do is come to him, and any turmoil we feel in our hearts will be put to rest. Jesus tells us to take his yoke upon us, learn from Him, be like Him: gentle and lowly in heart, and we’ll find rest for our souls and peace of mind. Jesus is quoting Jeremiah 6:16 - “…Ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” What a relief it is to put our faith, our trust and our hope in Jesus.
Lord, you revealed the truth to the humble and they understood, but the proud and the powerful rejected you. Inspire me to follow you on the ancient paths, the good way, where I’ll find rest for my soul. Send the Holy Spirit to guard me against arrogance and pride. I know your yoke is easy and your burden is light when I submit to your will. This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
