Todays question:
"Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this?"

From John 3:​
​9 Nicode′mus said to him, “How can this be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this? 11Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

Reflection from Minister Tina Shelton:

​Jesus is asking this question of Nicodemus, a Pharisee, someone who, as a ruler, is supposed to know and understand the Jewish law inside and out so that he can teach it to the people.
 
Yet when Jesus answers his question, about the meaning of being born again, Nicodemus doesn’t understand. What we find is that, Nicodemus knows the law but lacks the deeper understanding that the Holy Spirit lends. If he did, then he’d understand what Jesus meant when he said, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.”
 
Too often, we make this very same mistake. We read God’s word, take it for face value and run with it. But that’s not exactly how we’re supposed to read scripture. We’re meant to meditate on God’s Word. Sit with scripture for a while and see what God may be speaking to us that we’ve perhaps not heard or understood before.
 
What I love about Nicodemus is that he, being a Pharisee, was humble enough to ask Jesus a question. And when he didn’t understand the answer, he was bold enough to ask another question. Indeed it was in this answer that Jesus gives one of our most treasured scriptures, John 3:16, “For God so love the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
 
No matter how versed we are in the Word, we should always be humble enough to ask for clarity and bold enough to seek deeper understanding. You never know, God may just change your entire life with the answer you receive.
