Today's question:
"Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"
From John 18:
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
Reflection from Erica Lake
When the Roman solders came to arrest Jesus, Simon Peter drew his sword and cut off one of the soldier’s ears. Jesus told Simon Peter to put his sword away because he, Jesus, was to drink from the cup God had given him. The “cup” to which Jesus referred was that he was to suffer and die on the cross for our sins. Just a few hours earlier in evening Jesus had prayed that this “cup” be taken from him. But if it was God’s will, he would accept it.
Now when Jesus asked the question, Jesus had accepted the fact that he was to drink from “the cup.” So, Jesus was telling Simon Peter to put away his sword because fighting would prevent Jesus from fulfilling God’s will.
God called on Jesus to do his bidding and die on the cross. Jesus heard God’s call and did what God wanted. When God calls you and me to do his bidding, how willing are we to answer that call and do what he wants? Jesus showed us that sometimes what God wants us to do can be very hard and possibly cost us our life.
